Part of the reason that we work so well together is that ADG takes an active lead in coordinating all building and site related disciplines, including Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Land Surveying, Civil, Geotechnical Engineering. Our offices currently use the latest versions of AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit software to create detailed building information models (BIM). Revit allows us to link with the building information model with our engineering consultants, decreasing our documentation time and allowing for more flexibility for multiple design options. This coordination between the disciplines reduces design inefficiencies and enhances our ability to resolve constructability issues before they occur.

Tharon did a beautiful job of distinguishing the different function of each area—from the light and comfortable sunroom, into the slightly more formal living room, into our warm, welcoming, kitchen with space for prepping, cooking, eating, and relaxing. Tharon and her team were involved in the project from the beginning, collaborating with the builder to ensure we maximized our space and kept the charm of a summer Cape home. Tharon provided valuable insight during the design phase and worked closely with our general contractor and subcontractors to ensure key details—like custom-designed woodwork—were implemented properly during construction. Her organization and attention to detail were evident as she installed all the interior furnishings in just under two days.

Derek is a sci-fi nerd at heart and lately has taken to creating fictional movie and video game poster art. Derek’s drive and passion to make poster art is fueled by the inspiring people he works with at ADG. In 2007, the partners decided to pursue different interests, so Joel reorganized the design firm as Anderson Design Group, Inc., narrowing the studio's focus to specialize in illustration and poster design. When Joel and the art team are not doing illustration work for clients, they create new poster art. Averaging 4-10 new designs per week, Team ADG has produced over 3,000 designs, including poster art for each of the National Parks.

For a peek into the past, see Nagasaki's eerie Battleship Island, or make the pilgrimage to Tokyo's Enoshima, an island of shrines. According to research done by Holland America, the cruise line’s customers are increasingly interested in longer cruises with more immersive experiences. The newly announced Holland America Line cruise leaves from Seattle and visits 13 exceptional destinations in Japan before returning to the U.S.

We did the research ahead of our cruise and booked a handful of cruise ship excursions as well as tours through private companies Cruise Critic’s sister company, Viator, and our parent company, Tripadvisor. We didn’t have the opportunity to try one of the country’s famous onsens for a soak in the hot springs or to eat ramen from a vending machine. Yes, you probably will have many days onboard, and you will spend, on average, eight to 10 hours in ports. For a cruise around Japan, this is especially meaningful, as most itineraries will visit at least eight ports (depending on the cruise length) around Japan and Korea, with few sea days in between to catch your breath. Take a historic route through the islands to experience the very best of Japan with your cruise.

This is especially true through ship-organized shore excursions, where you often spend more time on a bus than actually visiting Japan’s beautiful Shinto and Buddhist temples or historic castles. If you’re on a big cruise ship, your tour groups are going to be large, meaning you’re only as fast as the slowest person on the trip. Things that interest you might not interest others, and vice versa. From the Pacific Northwest, the ship, Westerdam, sails to Vancouver and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands before heading down to Japan. We often arrived to port too late to experience the markets in their full, fascinating frenzy, so we missed the skewered meats and fried bowls of deliciousness. We also visited a few places with no real plan -- just a map and a vision of trying local food or walking through a park. This helped us ease some of the potential monotony by spicing it up with some variety. “This cruise allows us to offer Japan ‘from your doorstep’ with no more than a domestic air flight to Seattle,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning at Holland America Line.

Other ports you’ll visit during a cruise around Japan provide a more tranquil setting with opportunities to get out into nature and visit ancient temples and shrines. In addition, many of our Japan cruise itineraries offer overnight ports of call to experience the nightlife of Japan; these may take place in Kobe and Kyoto.
