We did the research ahead of our cruise and booked a handful of cruise ship excursions as well as tours through private companies Cruise Critic’s sister company, Viator, and our parent company, Tripadvisor. We didn’t have the opportunity to try one of the country’s famous onsens for a soak in the hot springs or to eat ramen from a vending machine.
